MOV is usually pretty hit or miss but for all three Mr Bungle reissues they knocked it out of the park. I am a little bummed that this has platypus omitted which brings me back to the question of why wasn’t this a 2LP in the first place? Anyways, For what it is this pressing is phenomenal. Easily one of my favorite albums of all time. Disturbing and beautiful, this album is exquisitely unique and mind blowing. It’s a lot punchier and in general feels livelier and more animated than the other two, which still sound fantastic. Even more brilliant than the debut, DISCO VOLANTE showed quite clearly that MR BUNGLE was no one trick pony and had a seemingly bottomless wellspring of ideas and influences to mine. This week, we return to one of our favorite bands and scratch Disco Volante, the second album from avant-garde experimental rockers Mr. Compared to the other MOV Bungle reissues this one isn’t super loud like them, for the most part it’s on the quieter side.
Also there is absolutely no surface noise, the background is dead silent. The vinyl has some warping on side A but it still plays fine and side B is perfectly flat. As for the pressing quality, my sleeve arrived kinda beaten up but that may have been shipping and not MOV’s fault. But For an hour of music on one disc it sounds great. The mastering is great for the most part, my only complaints are the volume is inconsistent and the tracks that are meant to flow into eachother have space in between them. Overall I’m happy with this pressing, I just think it should have been a 2LP like the self titled album. Incorporating death metal, free jazz, experimental electronica, and ambient soundtracks, along with Mike Pattons outrageous vocal style, Disco Volante is probably the most important and groundbreaking release of Pattons storied career, and thats saying a lot.
